Monk's lost 'torture' device plea
A former monk convicted of shocking schoolboys with an electrical device has claimed he did not receive a fair trial because the device has been lost.Michael Murphy, 74, was convicted in 2003 for the offences, committed while a staff member at St Ninians List D school in Stirlingshire in the 1960s.
Murphy, then known as Brother Benedict, made the claim at a hearing at the Court of Appeal in Edinburgh.
He is applying to have his case reviewed by the Privy Council.
Murphy was convicted of 10 cases of assault against nine different boys and sentenced to two years in prison.
His crimes included shocking the boys with an electric device, force-feeding them vomit and whipping them with knotted boot laces.
However, he was released after only nine days after being given leave to appeal his conviction.
