Fans fined for offensive chants

Four Hearts fans who were arrested for singing offensive football songs on a train have been fined. The supporters were returning to Edinburgh after watching their team's goalless away match with Inverness Caledonian Thistle in November 2006.

Ian Taylor, 34, Steven Duffy, 31, Paul Girdwood, 25, and Ian McKenzie, 38, all pleaded guilty to breaching the peace.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court was told fellow passengers left the carriage in disgust during the journey.

The four fans, all from Edinburgh, had originally been charged with singing sectarian songs but this was deleted from the charge along with a further allegation that the offence was aggravated by religious prejudice.
