Churches split over unity
Services for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity are going ahead in Greenock this week despite controversy which has set back the aim of the faithful getting together.Wellpark Mid Kirk minister the Rev Alan Sorensen said: “With the current Pope’s statement last year in which he affirmed the Roman Catholic belief that it was the only true church – and specifically that other churches were not real churches, merely ‘eccesial communities’ - the unity we have cherished in recent years has been damaged.”
The representative of the Episcopal church is not taking part this week because of the Roman Catholic church’s position, however, leaders from various other church groups are still leading the services.
