School merger plans would fence off Catholic kids

Catholic kids could be fenced off from other children in the playground of a shared school. East Ayrshire Council are considering plans to merge two tiny rural schools on one campus and erect a railing to keep them apart.

At a demonstration against the plans yesterday, one parent warned: "This will stoke up bigotry."

Under the proposals, St Xavier's Primary in Dunaskin, Ayrshire, could be merged with nearby Patna or Bellsbank Primary - both non-denominational schools.

But the Catholic children and the other school's kids would be kept apart.
