Free Church bid to curb drinking fails

An attempt by the Free Church to stop drinking into the early hours of Sunday in Stornoway was thrown out by the Western Isles Licensing Board yesterday.

The strength of the board was cut by about one-third when three members who are also members of the Free Church declared an interest.

The board decided that the church did not represent a "significant body of opinion in the neighbourhood" and its objection was declared legally invalid.
