Taupo, Orkney services to have common features

Up to 1000 people are expected to attend a memorial service for murdered Scottish tourist Karen Aim in Taupo tomorrow.

The Rev John Howell of the St Paul's Union Presbyterian Church said 1000 people had been catered for at the service, which begins at 5.30pm.

Police investigating the 26-year-old's death are also planning to go to the service, which will be held a few hours before her funeral in the Orkney Islands.

Mr Howell said the two services would have many common elements, including the same first hymn and prayers focused on courage and forgiveness.

The memorial service has been planned with the help of Ms Aim's family, who have provided a half-hour video presentation about her life which will be played before the service begins.

A piper will lead mourners into the church, and a pipe band will play at her funeral at the East Mainland Parish Church in St Mary's on the Orkney Islands.

Mr Howell has written a prayer about courage that he plans to read, and he said the service in the Orkneys would include a prayer "asking for forgiveness for the person or persons who murdered Karen".
