Communion cups could raise a toast

Rare Aberdeen communion cups worth up to £30,000 are to be sold at auction in Edinburgh next month.

The set of four beakers were made by James Abercrombie of Aberdeen, between 1740 and 1750, and will be sold by auction house Lyon and Turnbull at its inaugural Scottish Silver Sale on February 13. It is believed that they were made to replace a set removed from the city's St Nicholas' Church by Jacobites.

The advancing Jacobite armies in Scotland in the 18th century played a strong role in the history of Scottish silver and plate, with soldiers collecting money and valuables to fund their cause. Troops caused devastation to early Scottish silver and a substantial amount of new sacramental plate was commissioned after the 1745 rebellion.
