Church vandal forgiven by congregation

Churchgoers have forgiven a vandal who smashed historic stained glass windows. Carl Knowles, 17, used shinty sticks to hit stones at the windows of St Andrew's Episcopal Church in Fortrose, Ross-shire.

A total of 43 panels were broken, causing almost £3000 worth of damage.

Knowles was admonished for the crime when he admitted it at Dingwall Sheriff Court yesterday. And minister the Rev Richard Birkett said he was pleased by the outcome.

Congregation member Valerie Walker added:"We are a joyful and forgiving people and we do not bear grudges. We wish him well."
