Well-deserved community gong for modest Baker

Modest Malcolm Baker has spoken spoke of his “shock and amazement” at winning the 2008 North Berwick and District Association of Churches’ Community Award.

The 70-year-old retired personnel manager from North Berwick topped a list of candidates nominated for their largely unsung voluntary work in the community.

His varied portfolio of voluntary jobs includes chair of the North Berwick Trust, press officer to the North Berwick branch of the RNLI , and vice-chair of the town’s community council.

George Irvine, president of the association of churches, presented the winner with an inscribed glass bowl on Tuesday night at a Holy Week ecumenical service in St Andrew Blackadder Church.
