Embryo row Cardinal finally emerges from Winning's shadow

Profile by of Cardinal Keith O'Brien: "It may have taken seven years - but it seems Cardinal Keith O'Brien has finally emerged from the long shadow of his predecessor Thomas Winning.

"His controversial Easter message attacking Prime Minister Gordon Brown's proposals for laws on embryo research catapulted the spiritual leader of Scotland's Catholics to the top of the national news agenda.

"Yet, when O'Brien, 69, was first appointed as successor to the outspoken Winning - who died in June 2001 - there were those who doubted his credentials as a hard-liner."
