Shock as offender works at care home
One of Scotland’s most dangerous sex offenders leaves his cell five days a week for a day job at a care home for frail and vulnerable old folk.Though he was caged for life for a horrific abduction and rape, George Clark works as a kitchen assistant Edinburgh’s The Elms, a Church of Scotland-run facility.
At his trial at the High Court in Edinburgh in August 1996, six months after the attack, judge Lady Cosgrove told Clark: “You present a significant risk to public safety because you are a danger to women.”
Yet despite his past as a rapist, wife-beater and pimp, Clark - who converted to Islam in 2001 and now insists on being called Yusuf Mohammed Ansari - is within striking distance of 40 elderly residents.
North east MSP Alex Johnstone, who represents the constituency where Clark abducted his victim, blasted: “It’s a disgrace that somebody with this record and who is guilty of such deviant behaviour, is being allowed out to work with vulnerable people.
“One of the main reasons for the criminal justice system is to take these kind of people away from the public.”
Last night a Church of Scotland spokesman said residents at The Elms are aware that cons are on work placement but are not given details of their specific crimes. He went on: “This is a long-standing scheme.”
