Free Presbyterian official admonished after hitting kids with belt
A bookkeeper for the Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland on Skye was admonished at Portree Sheriff Court yesterday - six months after sentence was deferred for good behaviour.Sylvia Fleming, 54, had admitted regularly hitting two girls, aged nine and 13, with a leather belt between June 2006 and April last year.
Sheriff Alasdair MacFadyen told her: "It appears you now appreciate the inappropriateness of your behaviour.
"I hope you won't be back here but if you are, you will be dealt with much more severely."
At the original hearing, Fleming's lawyer Roger Webb told the court his client was a "deeply religious person" who had taken a "biblical interpretation of chastisement".
The Rev Dr James R Tallach, Moderator of the Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland, said the Kirk Session would consider Fleming's future.
He said: "She is still a member and the fact that she has been admonished will be taken into consideration."
