Church of Scotland unites in Zimbabwe plea
The Kirk has united for the first time to call on the UK Government to help find a “political solution” to the crisis in Zimbabwe amid fears of genocide. The Church of Scotland yesterday resolved to finally take a stand after fellow Christians in the African country urged them to lobby Gordon Brown and his fellow ministers to act before more people die.
The move is a U-turn because the Rev Colin Renwick, convener of the Kirk’s World Mission Council, resisted a call at the General Assembly in Edinburgh last year to denounce the brutal regime, arguing that a statement could “inflame” the situation.
However, delegates – known as commissioners – have now decided to unite to “express outrage and urgent concern” about the suffering being inflicted on Zimbabweans under President Robert Mugabe’s rule.
