BBC radio priest John Fitzsimmons dies at 68

Popular BBC radio broadcaster Father John Fitzsimmons has died at the age of 68.

The controversial priest, who was once the rector of the Scots College in Rome, was known for his strident views.

During his time as pastor of St John Bosco parish in Erskine, Renfrewshire, he caused controversy by criticising Cardinal Thomas Winning and slamming the Catholic Church for being "fascist" and "undemocratic".

During his tirades against the Church and Pope John Paul II in particular, Father Fitzsimmons claimed it had fallen behind the times.

Father Fitzsimmons, born and bred in Paisley, defended his views, saying: "I'm not some heretical priest. I'm just a man who thinks."
