Church backs anti-casino stance

A Wigtownshire minister has taken the fight against a casino in Stranraer to a national church assembly.

Rev Mike Sheppard, of Ervie/Kirkcolm linked with Leswalt, moved an amendment at the Church of Scotland's General Assembly to a report to the Church and Society Council.

He urged: "Deplore the construction of new casinos as tools of regeneration and urge Presbyteries to be pro-active in their opposition of any such developments in their area."

And his move won the backing of the Church of Scotland.
