Community seeks outside help over Kirk dilemma

A remote Highland community is looking for outside intervention to help resolve a dilemma over whether the needs of the Church of Scotland should be put before those of its ageing population.

The Kirk wants to amalgamate three neighbouring parishes, which would be served from a new manse at Strontian.

The cost of the new accommodation would be met by the sale of the manse at Lochaline with an adjoining parcel of land, both of which are up for sale at offers over £256,000. The manse at Ardgour would also be sold.

But campaigners want the Lochaline properties taken off the market and transferred to the community at a nominal sum for use as day care or sheltered housing for elderly residents.
