Eric Liddell, the lost Olympian

As the track events begin in Beijing, Angela Levin meets the daughters of Eric Liddell, the Chinese-born British gold medallist.

It was only in May this year that Liddell's three daughters first made the trip to visit their father's grave.

"It was the fulfilment of an amazing dream," says his eldest daughter Patricia, a lively 74-year-old who lives in Ontario, Canada. "I have waited all my life to see where my father was buried, but hadn't been able to afford a trip to China. Seeing his resting place means that a gaping hole in my and my sister's hearts has finally been filled. I didn't realise until now how much pain we children had buried deep inside us."
