Fetlar nuns pray for planning consent

A community of nuns on an outlying Shetland island hope to help stem the tide of depopulation by building a new chapel and monastic retreat.

The Society of Our Lady of the Isles (SOLI), based on Fetlar for the past quarter century, say they too may have to abandon the island if they are not allowed to expand their centre.

Fetlar has seen its population fall by almost half in the last seven years and has asked the local authority for help stop the decline.

The society’s four nuns say their current home at Aithness does not allow the sisters to balance their monastic lifestyle with the need to provide accommodation for the growing number of visitors wanting quiet holidays.
