Stirling gets greetings from Stirling

Representatives from Stirling’s Scottish counterpart were in town to wish the village a happy 150th birthday, write Bill Tremblay and Megan Huff.

Stirling, Scotland’s Provost Fergus Wood and Council Officer Michael Lyon arrived in Ontario Tuesday, Aug. 19 for a five-day tour of the local area.

As a gift, Woods was given The Heritage Years book, a Canadian flag for his council chambers and a "world's greatest tractor parade" T-shirt.

In return, Mayor Peter Kooistra was given an official Scotland coat of arms plaque.

“As a farmer and someone who lives in a rural community, I feel instantly at home here,” Woods said. "I've noticed that people in Stirling are very polite and courteous. People look you in the eye when you walk down the street and they greet you.”

Stirling, Scotland’s rural component makes up 25 per cent of the city and while the farmland is similar, Woods noted the differences of the two municipalities.

“Stirling, Ontario, has seven churches and two pubs. We have seven pubs and two churches in my little village,” Woods said. “We see who has their spiritual priorities right.”
