'New perspective' needed amid school head crisis
Fears that a growing leadership crisis in Scottish schools will impact on Catholic education must be keep in perspective, according to the headteacher of Scotland's most successful Catholic state school.Teaching unions have warned that a lack of financial incentives and concerns about the administrative burden and isolation deter teachers from applying for headships.
But John Docherty, the headteacher of St Ninian’s High School in East Renfrewshire, said: “Headteachers need to be adequately rewarded, but I don't believe they are driven by monetary gain, rather by the opportunity to lead a Catholic school and to be part of the mission of the Church and its proclamation of the Gospel."
A new recruitment strategy team for the Archdiocese of Edinburgh has been formed and will meet early this term to address the situation.
