Thick or treat
Killjoy [sic] churchgoers accused a shopkeeper of promoting the occult after he put up a Hallowe’en window display.Newsagent William Gatt and wife Shona’s store front features a black cat, lantern, skull and gravestones - and encourages locals to stock up on treats for next week’s ghoul-fest.
But the couple were stunned when they got a letter of complaint from Banff Churches Together, a group made up of of the area’s churchgoers.
Secretary Fiona Stewart wrote: “We wish to express concern at the distasteful display in the window of your premises.
“We wish to emphasise that we have no problems with children dressing up and having fun at Hallowe’en. We are however concerned that your display is particularly morbid and can be perceived as promoting an unhealthy interest in occult practices, attracting children to things that are potentially very dangerous.”
Dad-of-three William, 44, said: “It will be coming down over my dead body [sic].
“We’ve had a lot of compliments so it won’t be going anywhere. No one else seems to have a problem."
