Macabre find at Highland church

A grisly discovery was made when a restoration team lifted the floorboards at an ancient Highland church.

As the soil and dust which had lain undisturbed for decades was cleared away, a large number of human bones – including some entire skeletons – were disinterred.

The macabre find was not entirely unexpected by experts delving into the past of the East Church, at Cromarty, on the Black Isle, as it was once common practice to bury people under the floor of a church.

For archeologists working on the site, there was an even more exciting find: evidence that the original church was mediaeval and therefore likely to be as much as 700 years old.

The East Church, one of the few pre-Reformation places of worship still standing, is undergoing a £1.2 million restoration after its owner, the Scottish Redundant Churches Trust, secured funding.
